Times Between Belts

On average, it takes two to four months to advance from one belt level to the next, but each student progresses at their own pace. Each belt level has from three to five skills which the student is required to master prior to grading for that belt. Each required skill the student masters is represented by a black stripe placed around the student's belt. When the student has received all of their stripes pertaining to the next belt level, they have mastered all the skills required for that belt. The student's name is then placed on the grading list and they receive a letter indicating their grading date and time. Between the time they receive their grading letter and their grading date, students are expected to attend class to review and perfect the skills they will be required to demonstrate at their grading. It is during this period that each student on the grading list will be pre-tested to ensure they are performing at the level necessary to grade successfully at their belt level.

Belt Grading Procedures

Belt gradings are when the results of the student's hard work and discipline are finally realized. All students are pre-tested to make sure they have mastered the necessary skills, making the belt test more of a demonstration and graduation than an actual test. Belt testing is done as numbers warrant, usually about once a month. Family and friends are encouraged to attend.
